Volleyball was being played, Kid Cudi was being cranked out over the system, and a fresh expo marker left a trace of the game plan on the locker room whiteboard.
“We have this chemistry you can’t develop in one season,” senior Nolan Clark said. “You have to develop it over a lifetime.”
Sixteen seniors would step onto the home field for the last game of the regular season on Saturday afternoon. Despite Thursday’s cancellation, they came well prepared to battle against Fargo South for the second seed spot in EDC heading into the state tournament.
“We just have to try and play our game,” senior Lucas Miller said. “As long as we play our game, the only people that can beat us are ourselves.”
Forty yards out from the goal, senior Brady Rotert launched the ball off of the outside of his foot, scoring his second goal of the night and last goal of his career at home. The level of ‘pure audacity’ displayed in Rotert’s performance tonight lead the Packers 2-0 into the second half Clark said.
Scoring off an assist by Kory Wolden, Lucas Miller would top off the lead ten minutes into the second half, answered by the first Fargo South goal scored on junior Nathan Sample minutes later. Despite the single goal scored by South, West Fargo came out on top.
“Even though it was senior night, I came out pretty calm,” junior Nathan Sample said. “I knew the win was important and would give us a lot of momentum going into the state tournament.”
Defending the 2nd seed in EDC, the seniors exited the field for the last time during the regular season, and will be spending the next few days preparing for the state tournament Oct. 11 at Shanley High School. Head coach Doug Millar declined to comment.
“We’re in the same spot as last year but we are playing better as a team,” Clark said. “We won’t just be squeaking by.”
