In West Fargo High School’s 2019-2020 schoolyear, there was no prom to be had in the spring. However, this year WFHS will be hosting a Grand March, Prom dance, and post prom on May 1st , all with the theme of, “An Enchanted Evening.” In order to purchase a prom ticket, students must have zero detention hours, no outstanding obligations, including no parking tickets, no mask violations and be passing at least five classes.

There have been no restrictions on students being able to invite dates from other schools nor will they have to be tested beforehand. However, masks will be required for all attendees and observers, the only exception being the participants during the Grand March. In order to attend the Grand March, visitors must be given a voucher by a junior or senior attending prom. All students who purchase a ticket will be given vouchers based on their grade level. Juniors will be given one voucher, and seniors will be given two.

Aiden Bertsch, Junior Class president at WFHS and leader of the activity and extra-areas subcommittee for prom, states how prom will be dealt with this year. “The Prom Committee has made a few changes due to COVID protocols. Masks will be required to enter. We are planning on have the dance floor runs horizontally across the commons to allow for plenty of space for social distancing. No decision has been made on if parents will be able to attend grand march, that choice will be made by the administration. Regardless, grand march will be live streamed.”

West Fargo High sent emails to parents and students grades 11-12 stating WFPS will be able to host a prom at both West Fargo and Sheyenne High school. However, since this initial e-mail communication, the district reported on April 5th that Cass County has a 8.02% COVID positivity rate and 4.47% in the state of North Dakota, a 5.7% increase in the county since this initial email was sent to families. This may lead to an adjustment in district learning models and events.

There are still many things that need to be set in stone, and West Fargo High School To ensure that prom is able to happen, the prom committee requests that students practice mitigation strategies such as social distancing and wearing masks both in and outside of school.
