The goal for Fill the Dome this year was 12,500 cans and to fill West Fargo’s 11,000 foot square at the Fargo Dome. Last year was the first year West Fargo filled the square, but this year they want to go past that and really move forward to show students care about Fill the Dome. School’s put the food on the dome floor on Nov 25th and on Nov 26th there was a press conference where Student Council members packed up all the food and shipped it to the Great Plains Food Bank, where they measured the total there.
“As far with a community level, the goal for Fill the Dome is to raise half a million meals, which is half a million people, and that really just makes it more personal,” senior Cole Bachmeier said.
Bachmeier, Student Body President, helps with all the final decisions with planning.
“[I] want to throw West Fargo in the lead of Fill the Dome this year,” Bachmeier said.
This year with Fill the Dome, instead of just a class competition, West Fargo calculated the ratio of the total number of cans divided by the number of students in each grade.
“This way it’s fairer and it might motivate the less populated grades to step it up and a really fair and accurate competition,” Bachmeier said.
For Fill the Dome, junior Brianna Faul is a coordinator for Aurora Elementary. Faul communicates with the elementary school and supplies the elementary school with boxes, answers questions they might have and then helps the students load cans.
“Fill the Dome is super important because it allows our community to get together and help the community for people who aren’t able to provide enough food for their families,” Faul said. “This is a great project that allows them to have food.”
Fargo Oak Grove’s goal this year was 18,000 cans. West Fargo Student Council increased their goal by 2,500 cans for a total of 12,500 cans this year. For school competition, Fargo Davies High School placed first, and Shanley High School was second place. Carl Ben Edison Middle School was first place for middle schools and Nativity Elementary School was first place for elementary schools. West Fargo raised more than 11,000 cans and the seniors at West Fargo won the class competition.
“It’s always a competition between schools, so they want to beat us and we want to beat them,” Faul said.
West Fargo did not reach the goal this year for Fill the Dome, but many members of student council thought Fill the Dome was the best year yet.
“[I] was a little disappointed, but the goals were set higher than they have ever been,” Bachmeier said. “I am super excited that West Fargo has done the best it has ever done though.”
The Student Council raffled two staff parking spots. Sophomores Taylor Laufenberg and Mykin Gunning won the two staff parking spot tickets by paying two dollars toward Fill the Dome.
“Mr. Wilson and Mr.Broe gave up their parking spaces this year for Fill the Dome, which was super kind of them to do that for the students,” Faul said.
Fill the Dome is important for everyone who is involved to build a positive feel in the schools.
“It has been a big push, changing in the culture,” Wilson said. “Fill the Dome is another opportunity for students to change the culture in the school and help other students and their families.”
