One year ago the school decided to throw multiple fundraisers for a fellow student with cancer. One of these fundraisers was a volleyball tournament. The tournament’s initial success carried over to this year’s tournament that went on October 30th. This was the 2nd annual Team Ian volleyball tournament. This year there were six different teams of 10-12 grade males competing for the championship, but the Safe Sets took away the gold, beating the Kiss My Ace 2-0 in the best of three matches.
The games honored junior Ian Alves, has been battling cancer for the past two years. The event received around 460$ and all the proceeds were given to Aleve and his family.
“I think the tournament is a good way to get everyone together to support Alve and his family,” senior Jadan Sorenson said. “It gets your mind off of what is going on.”
Sorenson was on the Kiss My Ace volleyball team.
“Ian always had a smile on his face,” said Daune Broe who was Alves Algebra 2 teacher, and is the adviser of student council.
“It was really hard because it was really hit or miss whether he’d be there or not,” Broe said.
Alves wasn’t able to attend the volleyball games but according to Broe, Alves and his family are not going to leave for their Florida trip until after all the activities are over.
“Ian has really strong will,” senior Camran Bonnema said. Bonnema was on the Safe Sets volleyball team. “He really shows you not to take life for granted.”
Other activities include the 2nd annual Team Ian run/walk that went on November 3rd. This was where people of all ages could sign up to walk or run the mile or 5k. Alves was able to attend the run but couldn’t run so he was pushed by multiple people across the finish line. The run/walk got around $17,000 and over 600 people participated in it. All the proceeds went to Ian and his family.
