Eons, ago Thor’s grandfather Bor thinks he defeats Malekith, the leader of the Dark Elves, and he takes their weapon, the Aether, and places it into a stone column to hide it away. The Aether is one of the five infinity stones and is a mystical source of power, which can be used for good or evil.
When Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) was exploring a weird phenomenon going on, she finds a secret room with the stone column holding the Aether. The phenomenon is when the rare alignment of nine realms occurs. This causes little portals all over the world that transports people, objects or animals to another realm. Jane Foster becomes curious on what is moving around inside the column and while she is looking inside the stone column, the Aether jumps out of the stone column into her. Foster catches an infection from the Aether and it triggers the awakening of Malekith and his army of Dark elves.
Jane Foster is unconscious the majority of the movie, and did not play a big part in the movie. When the Aether is finally out of her she is back to her old self and gets in some action with Thor. When Foster was actually part of the movie she made the movie more interesting.
With all the 3-D effects viewers eyes need to be able to adapt quickly from a montage of flying objects at them. The special effects made Thor’s (Chris Hemsworth) arms just pop out of proportion. When having a slow scene all viewers can see is Thors arms and viewer’s eyes are diverted from what is actually going on.
The directors were kids in a candy store. They went overboard with the 3-D effects. They made some of the random buildings pop out for no reason.
The “Thor: The Dark World” cast had a different director than Kenneth Branagh. He did want to direct “Thor: The Dark World,” but he wanted to take a break. Kenneth Branagh felt he was being rushed into the next movie. Marvel wanted Branagh to start directing “Thor: The Dark World” after he finished “Thor: The God of Thunder” the first Thor movie. The new director Alan Taylor directed six episodes of “Game of Thrones”.
Some of the “Game of Thrones” rubbed off into “Thor: The Dark World”. With all of the mystical creatures and weapons in “Thor: The Dark World” fits him perfectly. “Game of Thrones” had a large quantity of mystical and magic content in it.
Thor makes a promise with Lokil and makes sure to tell his father Odin (Anthony Hopkins) about it. When Thor returns from Earth from fighting with Malekith his father is not as angry at him for disobeying him. This was very uncharacteristic for Odin. Odin would usually be yelling at Thor and not be compassionate to him.
“Thor: The Dark World” was not a great movie. There was a large amount of action later in the movie. The beginning of movie was extremely slow paced and not much was happening. Loki was the only character who made the movie interesting. Also, he was a virus that will not go away. The movie would have been better if it had a better plot and more action.
