It is estimated that about two million people in the United States commit acts of self-harm. Most commonly these are young, middle or upper-class women of average to high intelligence, but it can potentially affect anyone. Whenever this problem is brought up, most people will talk about the need for victims to get help. However, what victims need to realize is that it is their own responsibility to seek out help.
Every person has been given their chance at life, and not doing everything in your power to capitalize on that potential is one of the worst actions a person can take. Any one person’s existence is dependent on winning a race of 500 million potential humans, not to mention the many other factors that must go right in order for this one person to have been born the way that they are.
Every person on this earth has overcome astronomically terrible odds to get their chance at life, and harming yourself is only wasting that chance. That is something that no one should ever do. No matter what others may think, or what you yourself may think, you have the potential to do something special with your life. Self-deprecation in any form is never worth the steep costs that some will have to pay for it.
It takes a deep and dark pain for someone to commit acts of self-harm, and this pain needs to be confronted. There are many options for treatment available to those that need it, and not seeking these options out is irresponsible. There is no reason whatsoever anyone should feel embarrassed or ashamed to seek out treatment for the pain and fear that they may feel, and if anyone is able to help them they should.
The plain and simple fact is that self-harm is based in fear; a fear of the pains we as people may incur as we go through our lives. Self-harm is never an answer to the pain that someone may feel, nor is it acceptable to waste the opportunities that they have been lucky enough to receive. Allowing self-harm to fester, untreated and ignored, is never excusable. Life is special and unique and beautiful, so do not waste it like this.
