Taking place in San Francisco, ‘About a Boy’ is 30 minute sitcom that first premiered Feb. 22nd. The main plot is about a man named Will Freeman (David Walton) who had just released a one hit wonder and does not have a care in the world- that is until the cutest 11 year old boy named Marcus (Benjamin Stockham) and his overprotective mother, Fiona (Minnie Driver), move in next door.

From there on out, Marcus will do anything to be with Will, no matter what the activity is. This turns out to be a problem for Will and Fiona for two main reasons. Will is single, and would much rather be trying to pick up women than be around a child all day. Marcus is Fiona’s entire life because the father has left them and she does not want Marcus to get comfortable around a male adult because they could leave Marcus.

As the season of the show continues on, Marcus starts to grow on Will in a very positive manner. Marcus calls Will his best friend since Marcus has trouble making friends at school. Marcus is unique, smart, mature for his age and with all of that, he is able to make Will act more like an adult and eventually become a father figure for Marcus. During this part of the show is when the audience may have tears in their eyes because it is so sweet to watch.

The progress of the show is slow as Will gets used to having a child around and always looking out for him. Will tries to make friends for Marcus but the plan usually falls through because Marcus wants  everyone to have a similar personally as Will. Now they both love each others company with the overall supervision of Fiona even though she does not agree with Will’s parenting skills but starts to finally accept that change can be a good thing. Even though Fiona is hooked on Marcus and shows she truly cares for him, Marcus needs some adventure in his life.

Change is a good thing and ‘About a Boy’ teaches this, while adding humorous remarks to almost every other sentence. The show is quite good at capturing emotion of all sorts. There are parts where Will can be a complete jerk and all the audience wants to do is hug Marcus. There are also parts where Fiona is OCD about what Marcus eats when Will is just being a rebellious dad and it makes the audience’s heart melt. Overall, About a Boy is a definite watch for Tuesday nights.
