With YouTube personality Miranda Sings coming  to Fargo tonight, Aug. 29, the Packer staff looks back on our initial impression of the eccentric comedian. Miranda will be at the Fargo Theater downtown performing for  her “Mirfandas.”

Like a female Pee-Wee Herman for a new generation, YouTube sensation,”Miranda Sings,” is so lovingly nerdy that she’s captured the attention of people across the nation; certainly, the young adults, teens and pre-teens, so-called “Mirfandas,” who follow her religiously on YouTube think so, commenting on her videos continuously with unadulterated enjoyment for every awkward dance move, every pose, every grotesque face and every punch line.

Miranda is the creation of Colleen Ballinger, an attractive woman with a lovely singing voice, who has found her niche on YouTube as “Miranda,” a classic class clown who truly believes everything she does is the best it could be and makes sure to tell her “Mirfandas” so as well.

As a regular part of her act, she hosts a professional singer on her show to share her vast knowledge of performing.

Julie Garnyé, as recent guest, was a good sport as she performed with Miranda on “I Will Never Leave You” (Henry Krieger/Bill Russell, Side Show) after being coached how to stand and make strange faces, as Miranda does, and having lipstick smeared across her face. Garnyé was in top form vocally while Miranda sang way off-melody. The combination of both made for comedic gold.

Miranda’s funniest moments came with her version of “Cell Block Tango” in which she sang and slurred bits of lyrics from all six women, and her final song, “Think of Me” assisted by her brother, magician Christopher Ballinger, who put her neck in a small “stockade” and pushed a sword through the device.  Every time the sword supposedly pierced her vocal chords, she sang in a beautiful voice; every time he withdrew the sword, she reverted to Miranda’s signature off-key style.

While some may not understand the creative genius that is “Miranda Sings,” she is undoubtedly climbing her way up the YouTube ladder of fame, gaining attention with each and every awkward dance move and off-key note.
